King Charles branded ‘workaholic’ by famous pal, as monarch leaves hospital

Must read

This Morning star Gyles Brandreth has provided an update on his friend King Charles after the royal dropped out of an event today to focus on his health. The King was admitted to hospital yesterday after suffering side effects from his ongoing cancer treatment and will be recovering over the weekend at his Highgrove estate in Gloucestershire.

The King’s long-time friend Gyles stopped by This Morning today, where he told hosts Josie Gibson and Dermot O’Leary that the royal is “very resilient” despite the health setback. “This is a man of 76 who is actually a workaholic. I saw him on Tuesday evening at a reception hosted by Queen’s Camilla,” he told the ITV show. “He came along to support her, he didn’t have to be there – he was a surprise guest.”

He added: “The following day there was an investiture, then there were two more receptions including one for regional media, then the following day he was due to see ambassadors. It’s a big programme but he loves doing it. It’s what he lives for – it’s been his life.

“So he’s been told, ‘Take a day off. Take a step back for a moment and take stock.'”

He added: “He is somebody who doesn’t want to sit around focusing on his illness. He wants to be serious about it, to take the advice but then to get on with doing it. He is a very resilient person.”

Charles was admitted for observation at The London Clinic for several hours yesterday before returning to his home at Clarence House in the evening. He was seen waving at wellwishers as he was driven away from his London home this morning.

The King, who announced last year that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, was forced to pull out of engagements yesterday afternoon and cancel an event in Birmingham.

The statement from Buckingham Palace read: “Following scheduled and ongoing medical treatment for cancer this morning, The King experienced temporary side effects that required a short period of observation in hospital. His Majesty’s afternoon engagements were therefore postponed.

“His Majesty has now returned to Clarence House and as a precautionary measure, acting on medical advice, tomorrow’s diary programme will also be rescheduled. His Majesty would like to send his apologies to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result.”
