Police officers were shocked by a gruesome discovery made by a landlord who found a deceased baby in his tenant’s residence. This initial find led to a more disturbing uncovering.
The body of a lifeless infant was located at the dwelling of Jessica Mauthe, a 39-year-old tenant, concealed in towels and garbage bags within a closet. Following this grim revelation, Mauthe was arrested and presented in court for preliminary hearings. Subsequently, officers also found the bodies of three more newborns hidden in tote bags and buckets in the attic of the house.
During her court appearance before District Judge J. Gary DeComo in western Pennsylvania, Mauthe pleaded not guilty to charges including criminal homicide, involuntary manslaughter, concealing the child’s death, and abusing a corpse, as per court records.
Testimony from a Pennsylvania State trooper revealed that the homicide charges were linked to a child born approximately 18 months ago, while the manslaughter charges stemmed from a child born around six years ago.
According to statements provided by Mauthe, she detailed the circumstances of all four children, all of whom she claimed to have birthed in the bathroom. Mauthe alleged that the first baby made a sound before she passed out and woke up on top of the deceased infant. Specifics about the second and third babies’ conditions at birth remain unknown. Mauthe reported that the third child, referred to as “Baby C,” did not make any noise when delivered, while the fourth child, also born in the bathroom, was allegedly killed by Mauthe.
In an affidavit, law enforcement detailed that Mauthe admitted to wrapping a towel around the fourth child, who had initially shown signs of life, until the baby was silent. Mauthe confessed to holding the baby for a period before its eventual quietness, unsure if the death resulted from her grip or suffocation.
Mauthe’s defense attorney argued in court that the prosecution lacked evidence to support the homicide and manslaughter charges, emphasizing the need for concrete proof regarding the cause of the babies’ deaths. The defense suggested that Mauthe’s statements might not be reliable due to potential post-childbirth delirium caused by physical distress.
As of now, Mauthe remains in custody at the Armstrong County Jail, facing multiple charges without bond. The schedule for her next court appearance is pending.
