The Sky News reporter who was told “to go back to your country” by a far-right US politician has blasted Donald Trump’s administration.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a MAGA Rep, was caught on camera tearing into Sky News journalist Martha Kelner on Thursday. Sickening scenes showed Ms Taylor Greene, 50, shout: “We don’t give a crap about your opinion and your reporting. Why don’t you go back to your country where you have a major migrant problem?” The vile rant happened as Ms Kelner attempted to ask the Republican what she felt about the Signalgate blunder, which has laid bare the level of the contempt some of his key cabinet members feel for their “free-loading” European allies.
And Ms Kelner, 35, believes the clash further highlights the US’ views of Europe, particularly the UK. Speaking from Washington DC, she told the media on Thursday: “There’s an anti-British and an anti-Europe thing in this administration. Her shouting at a journalist and being so rude in one of America’s most important institutions is not a good look.”
The journalist also said she has been inundated with messages from Americans apologising for the MAGA-firebrand’s extraordinary outburst, caught on camera and shared widely across mainstream and social media. Other messages online refer to Ms Taylor Greene’s history, as she swore at Emily Maitlis in another vile outburst last year.
During her tirade, Ms Taylor Greene added: “You should care about your own borders. Do you care about people from your own country? What about all the women that are raped by migrants?”
Things became so heated in the Senate that Ms Taylor Greene’s minders physically kept her away from the reporter, it is said. However, Ms Kelner anticipated the politician to take the angry tone from the offset.
Ms Kelner, who previously worked for The Guardian, continued: “It was an exercise in deflection. I did expect her to take that tone with me. I didn’t take it personally and I’m not a victim.
“The footage has gone viral and had millions and millions of views here in the US and in the UK. I’ve had messages from people all around the world – but particularly from Americans, saying ‘We’re embarrassed’ and that ‘she doesn’t represent our views’.”
As soon as Ms Kelner asked the MAGA Rep about the US security breach, the politician demanded to know where Ms Kelner was from. When Ms Kelner said she was British, the far-right politician and conspiracy theorist from Georgia launched her sickening rant. However, the Sky News reporter did not back down and instead repeated the question.
It led to Ms Taylor Greene accusing Britain of putting lives at risk in Ukraine. Ms Kelner told Mail Online: “Marjorie Taylor Greene knew where I was from. There’s an anti-British and an anti-Europe thing in this administration.
“I haven’t heard from the White House. I don’t expect to. I suspect the way the Trump Administration’s handling will continue to be that they’re trying to tough it out.”
