A tragic incident unfolded when a man, who had just purchased flowers for his wife for a romantic evening, met with a rare accident. Humberto Hernandez’s life was unexpectedly cut short due to a freak incident caused by a blown tire on a driver’s vehicle in California.
According to Motorcycle Officer Eddie Bermudez, the fatal accident occurred as a fire hydrant was dislodged and propelled through the air, striking Humberto as he walked with his wife along an East Bay street. If Humberto had been slightly positioned differently on the pavement, the accident could have been avoided, highlighting the extremely unlikely nature of the event.
The unfortunate incident occurred in June 2007 as Humberto, 24, and his wife were strolling with a bouquet of flowers and cherries in preparation for a dinner reservation. A Ford Escape, driven by a 45-year-old woman from Danville, veered off the road after a blown tire, colliding with a fire hydrant that was sent hurtling towards Humberto, tragically hitting him in the head.
Witnesses described the horrifying event as Humberto walking just ahead of his wife before being struck by the flying fire hydrant, which continued to travel with immense force even after the impact. The water pressure within the hydrant was so strong that it propelled the 500-pound object like a projectile, causing devastating consequences.
Despite the efforts of emergency responders, Humberto was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind his wife, who was fortunately unharmed. The couple, who had recently immigrated to the United States, had no family or financial support in the country, underscoring the poignant tragedy of their situation.
