“NATO Mission: UK Warship Monitors Russian Vessel”

Must read

A Royal Navy destroyer and helicopter were dispatched on a 48-hour NATO mission to monitor a Russian warship in UK waters, marking a significant milestone for the alliance.

HMS Duncan, based in Portsmouth, was called upon by NATO Allied Maritime Command to track the Russian destroyer Vice Admiral Kulakov as it traversed the English Channel during the operation.

According to the Royal Navy, this operation signifies the first instance of a Royal Navy warship being directed by the alliance for such a task, contributing to broader security initiatives in northern Europe. This effort complements the ongoing work of HMS Somerset from Plymouth in collaboration with NATO in the North Atlantic.

Equipped with advanced sensors and systems, the Type 45 destroyer intercepted the Kulakov in the North Sea and monitored its journey towards the island of Ushant off the French coast. A Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron, stationed at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton, assisted in aerial surveillance of the Russian vessel, alongside aircraft from the Dutch Air Force NH90 and the French Navy.

The operation underscores the Government’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding UK waters and ensuring national security through the Plan for Change initiative.

Al Carns, Minister for the Armed Forces, emphasized the Royal Navy’s readiness to respond to Russian naval activities and its continuous monitoring efforts to protect British territorial waters.

Commander Dan Lee, HMS Duncan’s Commanding Officer, highlighted the operation as a demonstration of the Royal Navy’s commitment to safeguarding UK waters and collaborating seamlessly with NATO allies to ensure maritime security.

Commander Matt Millyard, in charge of HMS Somerset, noted the ship’s involvement in Operation Relentless since August, supporting the UK’s nuclear deterrent and NATO defense efforts. He highlighted the crew’s readiness for upcoming operational commitments following a period of intense activity.

This development showcases NATO’s interoperability in action through coordinated efforts among the UK, French, and Dutch forces, reinforcing the collective resolve to uphold international maritime norms.
