Local residents are expressing anger over the premature installation of a towering Christmas tree in the heart of Birmingham’s Victoria Square, more than two months ahead of the festive season. The massive 65-foot fir tree was recently positioned to kick off the city’s annual German Market, dominating the skyline alongside businesses on New Street and adjacent to council offices.
Critics argue that the tree’s early presence in mid-October, prior to Halloween and Bonfire Night, is untimely. Furthermore, preparations for market stalls have commenced well ahead of the traditional Christmas period, prompting dissatisfaction among locals.
One resident, Richard McQuaid from King’s Heath, voiced his frustration, suggesting that the city council should focus on essential services like waste collection rather than premature festive decorations. He emphasized the stark contrast between the decorated square and the current seasonal context, highlighting the excessive lead time to Christmas.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by Birmingham residents this year, particularly the impact of a prolonged bin strike leading to accumulated rubbish, McQuaid underscored the misplaced priorities in the city.
In response, Birmingham City Council clarified that the Christmas tree was erected by Frankfurt Christmas Market Ltd, in preparation for their festivities beginning on November 1, which is still nearly two months before Christmas Day.
Another local resident, Georgina Walsh from Stechford, highlighted the polarizing effect of the Christmas market in Birmingham, noting that opinions are divided between those who support and oppose the early festive preparations. Walsh emphasized the inappropriateness of discussing Christmas in October before Halloween and Bonfire Night have passed.
The public response extended to social media, with individuals expressing dismay over the premature Christmas decorations, emphasizing the need to observe the current season before transitioning to Christmas festivities.
The Birmingham Frankfurt Christmas Market is scheduled to open on November 1 and continue until December 24. The council clarified that the market is managed by Frankfurt Christmas Market Ltd, a separate entity responsible for organizing the event logistics, stalls, and entertainment, emphasizing that it is not a council-run initiative.
