Two individuals have been taken into custody on suspicion of manufacturing a hazardous substance aimed at minors known as ‘lean.’ Law enforcement officials conducted a search at a residence in Castle Vale, Birmingham, on October 16, seizing numerous bottles of Phenergan, codeine, and various medications, along with equipment such as beakers, funnels, empty containers, and an automatic mixer. Additionally, authorities found cocaine, cannabis, cash, a samurai sword, and pepper spray at the location.
A 41-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man were apprehended on suspicion of involvement in producing the Class-B drug, lean. A spokesperson from the West Midlands Police stated that the arrests were made following a warrant execution related to the production of the dangerous substance.
The suspects have been released on bail while investigations are ongoing. The seized items included a significant quantity of Phenergan, codeine, and other substances, as well as drug paraphernalia. The production of ‘Lean’ is concerning due to its appeal to children and adolescents, potentially resulting in adverse effects on mental health, including psychosis and cognitive impairment. The substance may contain harmful ingredients like paracetamol, which can lead to severe health issues, including liver damage and fatality.
Authorities urge anyone with information to contact them or provide anonymous tips through Crimestoppers. ‘Lean,’ also known as “purple drank,” is an illegal concoction containing codeine, cough syrup, soft drinks, candy, sometimes alcohol, and promethazine, misused predominantly by teenagers and young adults in social gatherings.
