Malta is renowned for its rich history in the film industry, boasting several notable filming locations. Films like Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and The Count of Monte Cristo have utilized the picturesque backdrop of this Mediterranean country. However, one lesser-known movie that has made a lasting impact on the island is Popeye.
The 1980 film, starring Robin Williams and Shelly Duvall, has been immortalized through the iconic Popeye Village, originally constructed as a film set. This village has now been transformed into an open-air museum and theme park, attracting tourists year-round.
Located in a remote cove on Malta’s North-Western tip, Popeye Village comprises approximately 20 rustic wooden buildings. Visitors can enjoy interactive exhibitions, engaging actors, and a variety of complimentary activities suitable for both adults and children.
Despite its initial mixed reviews upon release in the UK in April 1981, the film Popeye has somewhat faded into obscurity compared to other Disney productions. Currently holding a 5.4 IMDb rating and a 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie’s legacy lives on through the charming Popeye Village.
Constructed over four months starting in June 1979, building the village was a massive endeavor. With a team of 165 workers, the set was meticulously crafted using hundreds of logs and thousands of wooden planks imported from the Netherlands.
Although the film set’s remote location posed challenges during filming due to logistical issues and inclement weather conditions, the unique attraction has persevered. Visitors can explore the village for a nominal fee of around 15 euros, offering guided tours, entertainment, and various amenities at exceptional value.
Popeye Village provides a range of activities such as mini-golf, play areas, and a cinema, all included in the admission price. This affordable and enjoyable experience stands out amidst many overpriced tourist attractions, making it a popular choice for tourists seeking a memorable and cost-effective outing.
With actors scattered throughout the village, guests can interact with them, adding to the immersive experience and providing ample photo opportunities. During the off-peak season in late November, visitors can appreciate the stunning coastal views and peaceful ambiance of the village, enhancing the overall experience.
Each building within the village is well-preserved and accessible, allowing guests to explore and engage with the environment as if stepping into the world of Disney’s creation. The absence of long queues and the abundance of entertainment options make Popeye Village a delightful destination for all ages.
Spending over three hours at the village, I found myself captivated by its charm and the array of exhibitions available. The day at Popeye Village turned out to be the highlight of my trip to Malta, leaving me eager to watch the film that inspired this unique attraction.
