“Powerful Wind in Wellington: Woman Narrowly Escapes Traffic Mishap”

Must read

A woman narrowly avoided a dangerous situation when she was unexpectedly pushed towards moving vehicles by an unusually strong gust of wind. Video footage captured the moment she was walking towards a pedestrian crossing when the wind, reaching speeds of 85mph in Wellington, the windiest city in New Zealand, swept her off her feet. Despite attempting to grab onto a traffic light post, she missed and fell onto the road.

Fortunately, there was a brief gap in traffic after a few cars had passed, allowing them to stop in time as the woman picked herself up and safely reached the curb without serious injuries. Social media users expressed astonishment at the power of the wind in Wellington, with one person noting that such conditions are unique to the city.

In a separate incident, a man tragically lost his life after being struck by a tree branch in a Wellington park during the stormy weather. The severe winds and heavy rain disrupted transportation, school operations, and power supply in various parts of the country. Flight operations in and out of Wellington were temporarily suspended due to the weather conditions, leading to turbulent take-offs and landings upon resumption. The storm also disrupted ferry services.

Authorities advised residents to avoid city parks and reserves due to the risk of falling trees, with thousands of properties in the neighboring rural region experiencing power outages. Schools and businesses were closed for the day in the affected areas. Wind and rain warnings were issued for the lower North Island, where Wellington is situated, and most parts of the South Island were also affected.

The adverse weather conditions led to the closure of state highways on both islands due to flooding and landslides. In Hawkes Bay, a truck was overturned by the wind, causing injuries to one person and closing the road. New Zealand’s geographical location and mountainous terrain contribute to the unpredictable weather patterns experienced throughout the year. Meteorological services predicted a temporary easing of the storm on Wednesday before a more severe weather system was expected on Thursday.
