“Rising Food Prices Spark Consumer Concerns”

Must read

Food prices have been steadily increasing due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. When entering supermarkets, consumers often find that the prices of their favorite products have risen once again. Many people are opting for supermarket own-brand basic ranges to save money instead of purchasing well-known brands. However, this cost-saving strategy doesn’t always prove effective, as observed during a recent visit to Marks & Spencer.

While Marks & Spencer is typically considered a luxury retailer, offering some everyday products at reasonable prices, a comparison was made with other retailers. For instance, M&S’ Classic Mayonnaise is priced at £1.50 for a 500ml tub, slightly higher than Sainsbury’s and Tesco equivalents. However, a new product in the Only… Ingredients range at M&S, Olive Oil Mayonnaise with only six ingredients, shocked consumers with its price of £4.50 for a 250g tub.

Despite the product description highlighting the quality ingredients used, such as olive oil, egg yolks, mustard, vinegar, salt, and water, the significant price difference raised eyebrows. The surge in the cost of olive oil globally over recent years has contributed to the higher prices of products containing it, like the Olive Oil Mayonnaise. While other products in the Only… Ingredients range are more reasonably priced, the disparity in costs for specific items has caused concern among consumers.

Factors such as reduced global supply due to poor harvests, supply and demand imbalance, higher import and supply-chain costs, currency effects, and retail pricing tiers contribute to the escalating prices of olive oil and related products in British supermarkets. Despite the positive aspect of simplifying ingredients in food products, consumers are hesitant to pay exorbitant prices for basic items. The high cost of olive oil and its derivatives is a result of various global and local challenges affecting the supply chain and production costs.

While the Olive Oil Mayonnaise stands out for its steep price in the Only… Ingredients range, it is hoped that other products in the range remain reasonably priced. Consumers are concerned about the rising costs of essential food items and hope for more affordable options in the market. Marks & Spencer has been approached for comment on the pricing strategy of their products.
