Rory McIlroy gets one up on Tiger Woods as PGA Tour legend returns to action ahead of The Players

Must read

Rory McIlroy got the better of his good friend and TGL business partner Tiger Woods after the PGA Tour pair competed in the Seminole Pro-Member on Monday.

McIlroy and Woods were a part of a strong field in the exclusive tournament that takes place at Seminole Golf Club in Juno Beach Florida. McIlroy paired up with his dad Gerry, whilst 15-time major champion Woods was partnered with former CEO of the PGA of America Seth Waugh.

In the gross standings, the McIlroy duo ended the event in a tie for-13th, after shooting a 68, with their net score of 66 leaving them tied for 16th on the other side of the draw.

Woods and Waugh, meanwhile, were further down the pack, finishing in a tie for 54th in the gross list with a 71, as well as in a share for 26th with an adjusted score of 67 in the net standings. McIlroy and Woods were not the only big-name PGA Tour stars who competed.

The likes of Shane Lowry, Justin Thomas, and Collin Morikawa were all in action, as was United States Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley. The team who came out on top in the gross standings included BMW PGA champion Billy Horschel, who shot a 64, pipping Ryan Fox and Jimmy Dunne III in a scorecard playoff.

Fox and Dunne, however, did sweep up the net crown, having finished with an adjusted 61, one shot clear of Corey Conners and Peter Broome. Plenty of fans will have had their eyes on Woods’ score, with the 15-time major winner yet to feature on the PGA Tour in 2025.

His last competitive outing came at last year’s Open Championship at Royal Troon, where he missed the cut in testing conditions. He was set to make his tournament comeback last month as host of the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, but opted to withdraw in the build-up following the passing of his mother Kultida.

Having missed the event, Woods also opted to skip this week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill despite having a lifetime exemption into the PGA Tour’s Signature Evens. Woods is eligible to compete at next week’s Players Championship, but he is yet to confirm whether he will be in the field.

Speaking at the Genesis last month, the 49-year-old has his sights on playing more big tournament golf. “My goal was to play more and I haven’t played. Got to work on that,” he said. “This process was unexpected. I’ll get back after it and look forward to playing some bigger events.”

Woods is expected to compete in the opening major championship of the season at the Masters in April. The five-time champion has played the last three editions of golf’s most prestigious tournament at Augusta National, making the cut on all three occasions but withdrawing in round three of the 2023 event.
