Australia’s interim captain, Steve Smith, has spoken out following a tense moment with England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer during the closing stages of play at the Gabba. The visitors needed to dismiss the Australians for fewer than 64 runs, but Smith sealed the victory with a decisive performance, scoring the winning runs for the second consecutive Test.
At 41-2, Australia was in a precarious position when Smith took to the crease. However, the skipper turned the tide, showcasing his prowess by scoring an impressive 23 runs off just nine balls. Smith’s aggressive batting included two massive sixes and two boundaries, dominating Archer with 15 runs from only five deliveries.
The intense exchange between Smith and Archer occurred during a heated over at the Gabba, with Archer visibly frustrated after being hit for four by Smith. Undeterred, the Aussie captain continued to assert his dominance by dispatching Archer for a boundary and a six.
In the subsequent over, Smith smashed another six to secure the victory, propelling Australia to a commanding 2-0 series lead as they head into the next Test in Adelaide.
When questioned about the on-field confrontation with Archer, Smith downplayed the incident, labeling it as good-natured banter and praising Archer’s competitive spirit.
Archer’s struggles with the pink ball throughout the second Test mirrored England’s overall bowling performance, which fell short of expectations set on the opening day in Perth.
England had set a challenging target of 334 runs, led by Joe Root’s unbeaten 134 in the first innings. However, Australia comfortably chased down the total, with significant contributions from Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Smith, Alex Carey, and Mitchell Starc.
Despite a late fightback from Ben Stokes and Will Jacks, England faltered, eventually bowled out for 241. Travis Head and Weatherald set the tone for Australia’s chase, paving the way for Smith’s aggressive batting display.
Reflecting on his performance, Smith emphasized the team effort, highlighting the lower-order batsmen’s resilience in the first innings and crediting their contribution to the team’s success.
As the series progresses, England faces a daunting task in Adelaide, knowing that anything less than a victory will result in Australia retaining the Ashes. The third Test is set to commence on December 17.
