“Tennis Star Dan Evans Contemplates Quitting Davis Cup”

Must read

British tennis player Dan Evans, known for his performances in the Davis Cup, expressed his frustration in 2022 over being overlooked for a doubles match, considering it an insult. Despite his successful history with the British team in the 2015 Davis Cup, Evans contemplated stepping away from representing Great Britain due to this decision.

In an interview with the i, Evans emphasized feeling overlooked for the Davis Cup doubles matches, stating, “It’s disappointing and a bit insulting that I haven’t been chosen for the Davis Cup [in doubles].”

Regarding the selection process, Evans argued that the focus should not solely be on doubles rankings but rather on the compatibility of playing styles for a Davis Cup tie, suggesting that different players could be considered based on their game styles.

Evans recounted his attempts to discuss his inclusion in the doubles matches during the 2021 Davis Cup Finals but was left out of the lineup. Despite his disappointment, he acknowledged the captain’s authority in making such decisions.

The following year, Evans partnered with Neal Skupski and secured a doubles victory in the match against Colombia, contributing to Great Britain’s success in the Davis Cup. However, Evans had to skip the 2023 finals due to an injury.

The 2025 Davis Cup Finals progressed without Britain following their defeat to Japan in the qualifying round. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, advanced to the semi-finals after defeating Austria. Berrettini and Cobolli’s victories secured Italy’s place in the last-four stage against Belgium.

Former Wimbledon runner-up Berrettini and Cobolli’s impressive performances propelled Italy into the semi-finals, underscoring their strength in the competition, even without their top players.
