Must read

A significant rail travel sale is scheduled to kick off this month, offering discounts of up to 50% on numerous popular routes operated by various train companies.

The Great British Rail Sale is returning to make train journeys more budget-friendly, with millions of reduced-price tickets up for grabs. Spanning from January 6 to January 12, 2026, this week-long sale provides an opportunity to secure discounted fares with savings exceeding 50% on advance and off-peak tickets.

These discounted fares are applicable for travel on thousands of routes between January 13 and March 25, 2026. With almost all train operators participating and routes encompassing the entirety of the UK, now is an ideal time to book whether you’re planning a city escape, commuting, or seeking activities for the half-term break.

Noteworthy deals include £10 trips from South Coast destinations like Portsmouth to London Waterloo, offering a substantial 59% discount. Travelers journeying from Exeter to London Waterloo can also benefit from a remarkable 76% price reduction, with tickets dropping from £41.70 to just £10.

In other promotions, a 50% price cut will be in place for the London Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street route, with tickets selling for a mere £7. Additionally, passengers can take advantage of the reduced fare from Manchester Piccadilly to Manchester Airport, priced at just £1.20 down from £2.90.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed, “The Rail Sale’s return, along with the freeze on rail fares for the first time in 30 years, aims to alleviate the cost of living for passengers. Cheaper rail travel is a shared desire, and this sale offers substantial reductions, catering to various travel needs.”

This year marks the fourth iteration of the Great British Rail Sale, where travelers saved around £8 per journey last year, resulting in over a million tickets being purchased. The government is keen on increasing rail usage to reduce carbon emissions and free up road space for emergency vehicles and freight.

Jacqueline Starr, executive chairperson and CEO of Rail Delivery Group, noted, “The Rail Sale offers additional incentives to opt for rail travel, whether for reconnecting with loved ones or exploring new destinations. Rail remains pivotal in the lives of many, supporting local economies and providing a sustainable mode of transportation.”

“This year’s Rail Sale will present millions of discounted advance fares across the network starting January 6, offering customers savings on trips of all sizes. By enhancing the accessibility of rail travel, we aim to attract more individuals to experience the convenience and comfort of rail journeys.”
