A tragic incident unfolded in Lardos, a coastal village on the Greek island of Rhodes, where a three-year-old British girl, identified only as Matilda, passed away after falling into a hotel swimming pool while on vacation. The young child had been left unattended for approximately 10 minutes by her 44-year-old uncle, who was responsible for supervising her during their family holiday.
Matilda was discovered unconscious at the bottom of the pool by a British doctor who happened to be present at the scene. Immediate CPR was administered before she was rushed to the General Hospital of Rhodes, where she was intubated. Despite efforts to stabilize her condition, she was later transferred to hospitals in Crete and finally airlifted back to England, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries after 12 days of battling for her life.
Following the incident, the uncle and a 54-year-old travel agency manager responsible for the hotel’s guests were taken into custody by authorities. They, along with the 57-year-old hotel owner and the hotel’s director, are now facing legal repercussions in connection with the child’s untimely death.
An investigation at the hotel revealed lapses in safety protocols, including the absence of a lifeguard, rescue equipment, and a designated supervisor at the pool where the incident occurred. Legal representatives for the uncle and hotel manager have offered differing accounts, with the uncle’s lawyer stating he was not in proximity to the child at the time, while the manager’s lawyer argued that the pool did not legally require a lifeguard due to its size.
Law enforcement officials are currently analyzing CCTV footage to gain further insights into the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Reports indicate that a woman who was lounging nearby spotted Matilda in distress and promptly intervened by pulling her out of the water and alerting others.
Medical professionals had informed the family early on that the child had sustained irreversible brain damage from prolonged submersion in the water. The hospital’s director described Matilda’s condition as “brain dead,” noting her lack of responsiveness following the incident.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the heartbreaking loss of the young girl.
