Three individuals lost their lives in a blaze following a cargo plane crash during takeoff, leading to additional devastation on the ground. The UPS freight aircraft departed from the runway, igniting into flames, causing nearby businesses like Grade A Autoparts and Kentucky Petroleum Recycling near Louisville International Airport to catch fire. The impact resulted in a total of at least seven fatalities, with Gov Andy Beshear highlighting the severity of injuries sustained. As investigations commence, authorities are reconstructing the final moments before the tragic incident.
Unverified videos depict UPS Flight 2976, carrying 38,000 gallons of fuel, already on fire as it skidded off the runway. Aviation attorney Pablo Rojas observed the aircraft struggling to ascend amidst a fire on its left side, adjacent to one of its engines. Considering the substantial fuel load, Rojas indicated that an explosion or rapid spread of flames was inevitable due to the aircraft’s combustible nature.
Witnesses on the ground recounted the horrifying aftermath, with debris scattering up to 10 miles from the crash site, as shared by Louisville resident Justin Dunn. Meanwhile, New Albany resident Katie Didit described hearing a massive explosion while driving, initially mistaking it for a building fire. She observed the sky turning dark within minutes of the incident, capturing the transformation on video.
Kentucky Truck Parts & Service reported the crash occurring near their business, with an employee capturing the distressing aftermath. Although their team remained unharmed, several individuals in the vicinity suffered injuries and property damage. UPS expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing their commitment to safety and collaboration with investigative bodies for swift response and recovery efforts.
