Ukraine’s Resilience Amidst Occupation: Child Exploitation Concerns

Must read

I have recently come back from providing essential assistance to emergency responders and union members in Ukraine’s Donbas region.

Despite facing daily blackouts, missile attacks, and civilian casualties in various settings, including homes, schools, hospitals, and kindergartens, the Ukrainian people exhibit remarkable resilience. While they desire peace, they refuse to surrender their nation to Russia and endure the harsh conditions of occupation.

During my visit to the Save Ukraine center, I encountered children rescued from the occupied territories, revealing troubling statistics. Approximately one in ten children had experienced sexual abuse, with over 20,000 children reportedly abducted by Russia, suggesting widespread child exploitation.

The delay in transferring £2.5 billion from the sale of Chelsea FC to aid Ukraine due to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich’s actions is disheartening. Additionally, his involvement in a legal dispute over frozen assets in Jersey, with support from a member of the Conservative Shadow Cabinet, raises concerns.

Lord Wolfson KC, a Conservative peer and the Shadow Attorney General, representing Abramovich alongside former Trump adviser Eric Herschmann, signifies a concerning trend of normalizing interactions with Russian oligarchs, despite the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

The situation highlights the need for accountability, especially as populist and far-right leaders worldwide, including some in prominent political positions, seek to normalize relations with Moscow. The involvement of individuals like Abramovich and the actions of Lord Wolfson warrant scrutiny in light of the broader geopolitical implications and human rights violations.

The failure to address Lord Wolfson’s collaboration with a sanctioned oligarch calls into question the Conservative Party’s stance under Kemi Badenoch’s leadership, emphasizing the importance of holding them accountable for their actions.

In response, the Labour government must take decisive action by enacting emergency measures to prevent sanctioned oligarchs from exploiting the UK legal system and redirecting the nearly £30 billion in frozen Russian assets towards supporting Ukraine.

As Ukraine continues to defend its democracy on the frontlines, it is crucial for allies to stand in solidarity. Join us outside Tory Headquarters on Wednesday, January 7th, at 5 pm to show your support for Ukraine’s cause.
