With Mother’s Day (Sunday, March 30) just around the corner, millions of mums are getting ready for the one day of the year where they’ll be pampered and spoilt rotten. We’re talking breakfast in bed, chocolates, fluffy pyjamas, and of course, flowers.
In the UK, it is thought that an estimated two bouquets of flowers are delivered every single second on Mothering Sunday, as Brits spend a staggering £73 million collectively on cards and blooms. Whether you receive a small bundle of daffodils or a lavish bouquet of roses, flowers are always a welcomed present.
They’re a great way to brighten up the home, smell stunning, and are a great excuse to whip out the fancy vase you bought for Christmas. However, if you don’t look after your blooms properly – whether purchased from the supermarket or local florists – they’ll quickly wilt and start to flop if not looked after properly.
Flower and gift delivery service Eflorist has therefore shared its top flower care tips that every mum needs to know. The experts have also debunked two common myths believed to help keep flowers thriving – with their in-house experiment showing these hacks can actually harm your floral display.
In a statement to the Mirror, Eflorist said: “Place your flowers in a clean vase, as this is crucial for the longevity of your flowers. Make sure you clean it thoroughly with dish soap and warm water to remove any residue that could harbour bacteria.”
The aces recommend then snipping 2-3cm from each stem, and making sure to remove any leaves that fall ‘below the water line’. “Then, to refresh your flowers, re-cut the stems every 2-3 days and place them back in a clean vase of fresh water,” they added.
However, contrary to popular belief you should keep flowers away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators. Mums should also make sure their floral display is kept far away from any fruits, as this can also impact their health and stunt their growth.

There is a common old wives’ tale that claims adding a copper coin inside the vase of water would help keep your blooms thriving. This is because copper contains a natural fungicide that can help prevent bacteria from growing, which consequently prevents your flowers from dying early.
However, Eflorist put this theory to the test and found that it doesn’t actually work. In fact, their experiment found the coin actually caused some blooms to droop prematurely.
It’s a similar story for adding a teaspoon of vodka to your flower’s water – a hack that has been doing the rounds on TikTok. “The results of this hack did show some improvement for some flowers in the bouquet, but overall, the flowers did not have a significant enough improvement to be considered a working hack,” the experts concluded.
