EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have reported that EE customers are receiving urgent messages threatening the loss of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
According to Bitdefender, scammers are pretending to be from the popular EE network to entice individuals into clicking on deceptive links that lead to fake websites aiming to steal login information for monetary gain.
The success of this scam relies on creating a sense of urgency to prompt users to act without thinking. Bitdefender explained that scammers exploit this urgency by setting tight deadlines to make users feel like they are at risk of losing something valuable.
It is crucial for EE users to be vigilant and aware that legitimate EE alerts will only appear in their official EE accounts, not through unsolicited texts. Any message that pressures for quick action or includes countdowns should raise suspicion. Suspicious texts should be forwarded to 7726 and then deleted.
This type of scam has targeted EE customers in the past, with reports dating back to January this year of convincing fake messages related to reward points. Users have shared their experiences of falling victim to these scams, highlighting the need for caution when interacting with such messages.
EE has clarified that they do not have a points program and have provided examples of fraudulent messages to raise awareness among users. In response, EE advises users to never click on unknown links in text messages, refrain from replying to suspicious messages, avoid calling the numbers provided in such texts, and never share personal or financial information.
EE users are urged to exercise caution and follow the recommended safety measures to protect themselves from falling prey to such scams.
