West End’s ‘best musical’ is finally coming to cinemas – here’s all you need to know

Must read

SIX The Musical has already made its mark in the West End and it’s headed for the silver screen.

The beloved show has been hailed by fans as the ‘best musical’ in the theatre district and it is coming to cinemas next week.

Debuted at Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017, the historical play has since won two Tony Awards.

Written by Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow, it follows a girl band comprised of King Henry VIII’s six wives: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anna of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr.

The ladies stage a concert for the audience, with each of them explaining their individual stories through song.

Although the historical figures are widely known, SIX focuses on the women’s lives beyond the legacy of their royal ex-husband.

The synopsis teases: “The electrifying show follows the long misunderstood wives of Henry VIII as they strut out of the shadow of their infamous husband to reclaim their narrative and finally tell their stories in their own words – with plenty of royally good fun along the way.”

SIX The Musical Live! will premiere in UK and Ireland cinemas on Sunday, April 6.

Musical fans will know that the beloved show has toured around the globe.

However, the film was shot in the West End at London’s Vaudeville Theatre, with the original cast playing the main roles.

This includes Jarnéia Richard-Noel as Catherine of Aragon, Millie O’Connell as Anne Boleyn, Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour, Alexia McIntosh as Anna of Cleves, Aimie Atkinson as Katherine Howard and Maiya Quansah-Breed as Catherine Parr.

The critically acclaimed show has received five-star reviews from the likes of The Telegraph, who wrote in their 2023 review: “Six: Henry VIII’s fabulous queens will rule the West End for years to come.”

Viewers similarly rave about the play. One fan shared on Google: “Six the Musical is outstanding!! I like musicals but I’m not big on history or Henry VIII but just WOW!!

“I absolutely loved this show – not your usual show by any means- no set changes or interval just RAW talent telling a version of events in such a unique way that is both informative and funny.”

Meanwhile, a second person said: “SIX the musical is, in my opinion, the best musical. It combines history, feminism, and pop music. The costumes and the cast are wonderful.

“My favourite queen is Katherine Howard, but they are all amazing! The songs will be stuck in your head forever!”

SIX The Musical Live! is in cinemas from April 6.
