An atrocious incident unfolded as a wicked nursery school teacher assaulted her partner’s 4-year-old daughter, ultimately leading to the child’s tragic drowning. The perpetrator, identified as Amber Lee Hughes, committed the heinous act on January 23, 2023, resulting in the death of Nada-Jane Chalita while her father, Elie, was away for a job interview.
Hughes, infuriated by Elie’s departure without saying goodbye, which she perceived as a sign of infidelity, sent a chilling message prior to the abhorrent assault and killing. The message conveyed her deep hurt and a vow for revenge, stating, “You broke my heart; I’m going to burn yours. How could you do that to me?”
Subsequently, Hughes placed Nada-Jane in the bathtub and forcibly held her underwater until she drowned. Post-mortem examinations revealed that the young victim had also been sexually assaulted prior to her death.
During the trial at South Africa’s Johannesburg High Court, Hughes acknowledged suffering from borderline personality disorder at the time of the incident but admitted to being cognizant of her actions. She attributed the event to a dispute with Elie over his alleged infidelity, escalating when he urged her to stop contacting him.
After the tragic incident, Hughes made multiple suicide attempts, citing her troubled childhood and mental health as contributing factors to her behavior. Social worker Carina Wolmarans testified that Hughes had faced bullying and struggled with suicidal thoughts.
Despite expressing remorse for her actions, Hughes was convicted in August of premeditated murder and rape, resulting in life imprisonment. Elie, the grieving parent of the victim, emphasized that no sentence would ever suffice for the loss he endured, lamenting the lack of true justice in this world or lifetime.
