Young Farm Worker Dies from Fly Bite: Sepsis Tragedy

Must read

A tragic incident unfolded when a young farm worker passed away shortly after being bitten by a fly. Andrew Kane, aged 31, was working alongside his sister on a farm when he noticed a red mark on his elbow from the insect bite. Despite initially receiving antibiotics at the hospital, Andrew collapsed during a night out just two weeks later, leading to his admission to Northumbria Emergency Care Hospital. Doctors discovered that he had developed sepsis as a result of the horsefly bite.

Andrew, a father to a seven-year-old daughter, spent weeks in a coma before eventually succumbing on September 18, with his mother Rachel by his side. Originally from Northumberland, Andrew had a background in farming, following his family’s tradition of working as a contract farmer after his schooling.

Rachel recounted Andrew’s farming experiences, mentioning his involvement in lambing and dairy farming, as well as his brief stint as a painter and decorator. Despite initially dismissing the severity of the bite, Andrew’s health deteriorated rapidly after his collapse, leading to a five-week hospitalization and a transfer to Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital. Despite brief signs of improvement, his condition worsened, ultimately resulting in organ failure.

Rachel shared her emotional bond with her son, describing their close relationship as best friends in addition to being mother and son. She expressed disbelief at the sudden turn of events, highlighting Andrew’s caring nature even in his critical condition. Andrew’s passing has left a profound void, with Rachel reminiscing about their shared experiences and the deep connection they had.

In addition to Rachel, Andrew is survived by his daughter Skylar, sisters Antoinette and Ellesse, and nephew Hunter. His funeral is scheduled to take place in Morpeth on Thursday, where he will be laid to rest.
