An acclaimed B&B and café in Alburgh, Norfolk, has permanently shut down, leaving the local community in shock. The owner, Sonya Resemblance, cited the establishment’s challenging location as a primary reason for the lack of foot traffic, leading to its closure after operating for two and a half years.
The Dove Inn, known for its gluten-free offerings, bid farewell on Friday, ending its service to what Sonya described as a clientele of “beautiful people.” This closure adds to the troubling trend of pub and hospitality closures across Britain, driven by escalating operational costs and evolving consumer behaviors that are straining the industry.
Earlier this month, the cherished White Horse in Beaconsfield closed its doors permanently, reflecting a broader crisis in the pub sector. The industry faced dire warnings last year, with pub closures reaching a staggering 300 in the first quarter of 2025 alone due to soaring operational expenses.
Despite being recognized as one of the UK’s top 50 cafés at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, the inn could not sustain its operations. Sonya, who took over in July 2023, expressed pride in offering a completely gluten-free menu, catering to individuals with dietary restrictions.
In an emotional announcement, Sonya thanked the community for their support and acknowledged the business’s efforts in creating employment opportunities and fostering mental well-being through events and social gatherings. However, she lamented the challenges faced at the location, ultimately attributing the closure to its geographical constraints.
The closure came after the business previously signaled its struggles amid the tough landscape for retail and hospitality sectors. Despite efforts from loyal patrons to keep the business afloat, Sonya confirmed the closure on January 16, prompting an outpouring of supportive messages from saddened customers.
One patron expressed their disappointment, emphasizing the loss of a beloved meeting place and exceptional food, holding out hope for a potential return in the future.
