Labour MP Wes Streeting has condemned Baroness Mone for the need to take legal action to recover millions owed to the public for defective PPE. Streeting reiterated his demand for Mone to repay the substantial bill owed over faulty personal protective equipment. He suggested undisclosed strategies to recoup the funds owed by PPE Medpro, aiming to prevent Mone’s legal team from gaining an advantage.
During an LBC radio show, Streeting affirmed the pursuit of the outstanding money, emphasizing the necessity for accountability. He criticized Mone, a member of the House of Lords, for not voluntarily repaying the money and highlighted the unethical nature of defrauding taxpayers.
PPE Medpro, led by Baroness Mone’s husband Doug Barrowman, faced legal action from the Department of Health and Social Care for providing 25 million substandard gowns during the pandemic. The company’s financial troubles were exposed as it entered administration, owing £39 million to the government.
In addition to the £39 million, PPE Medpro faces a further £148 million in damages, costs, and interest following a court ruling against non-sterile gowns. Mone and Barrowman, residing in the Isle of Man, reportedly profited £65 million from PPE deals secured through governmental lobbying efforts.
The company’s administration coincided with ongoing investigations by the National Crime Agency involving the couple and the company. Despite the allegations, Mone and Barrowman have denied any wrongdoing. In response to Streeting’s comments, Mone’s legal team, Grosvenor Law, criticized the lack of response to their inquiries and accused officials of prejudicing a criminal investigation.
The ongoing legal battle and financial controversies surrounding PPE Medpro continue to unfold, with Mone and Barrowman vehemently denying any criminal activities and expressing confidence in the truth prevailing.
