More than 40 well-known personalities, such as Arlene Phillips, Mark Bonnar, Jason Isaacs, and Bill Nighy, have united to advocate for the removal of the “cruel” two-child benefit limit in the upcoming Budget.
In a letter addressed to Keir Starmer and organized by the Trussell foodbank charity, the celebrities emphasized the urgent need to eliminate the two-child limit, citing its detrimental impact on families across the country. They highlighted that the policy, which restricts social security support to only two children, is exacerbating child poverty and leading families to rely on food banks.
Notable figures like Simon Pegg, Stanley Tucci, Jodie Whittaker, and Levi Roots have also lent their support to the cause. Roots, known for creating Reggae Reggae sauce, shared his personal experience of growing up in poverty and stressed the importance of scrapping the two-child limit to uplift struggling families.
Various signatories, including actors, comedians, and chefs, expressed their concern over the punitive nature of the welfare system and emphasized the need to protect vulnerable families from economic hardship. They called on the government to prioritize the well-being of children by removing the two-child limit, which they believe would significantly reduce child poverty in the UK.
Both Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have indicated their intentions to address the issue, with Reeves emphasizing the unfairness of penalizing children from larger families. The current two-child benefit limit, introduced in 2017, restricts certain benefits to the first two children in most households, a policy that has faced criticism for its impact on child poverty rates.
The government has responded by highlighting ongoing efforts to support children’s development, including initiatives like Best Start Family Hubs and free school meals. Labour’s Child Poverty Strategy is set to be unveiled this Autumn, aiming to tackle the root causes of child poverty and provide essential support to families in need.
The celebrities’ collective plea to abolish the two-child limit underscores the urgency of protecting children from hunger and securing a brighter future for all. Their letter urges immediate action to address child poverty and ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive.
