Must read

Nearly 66% of adults have reported a worsening cost of living crisis in the past month, according to official statistics. The Office for National Statistics data highlights that energy and food costs continue to be major financial burdens for individuals. Approximately 1 in 30 adults admitted to running out of food and lacking the means to purchase more in the last two weeks.

The situation is more severe in deprived areas of England, with 8% facing food shortages, especially among renters and the disabled. Moreover, nearly 60% of respondents are scaling back on dining out, adding strain to struggling restaurants and pubs. The Labour party has emphasized addressing the escalating cost of living crisis as a top priority for the upcoming year, acknowledging its significance to voters in the upcoming local elections.

The ONS survey underlines that the cost of living is the primary concern for 88% of individuals, surpassing other critical issues such as the NHS, the economy, immigration, crime, and housing. The survey, conducted between December and January, showed a consistent level of concern compared to the previous year. Rising costs were particularly noticeable in food shopping, energy bills, and fuel prices.

In response to the financial challenges, many are resorting to strategies like reducing dining out, opting for cheaper groceries, and seeking discounts on food items. The survey also revealed that a significant portion of individuals find it difficult to afford energy bills, while some struggle to maintain a comfortable home temperature. Women, unemployed individuals, retirees, and self-employed workers are among the groups most affected by the escalating cost of living concerns.
