McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing frustration over the soaring price of a hash brown, which has nearly hit £2 at certain locations, as revealed in a viral post on social media platform X. The post showcased a snapshot of a McDonald’s menu board displaying the hash brown priced at £1.99 in the specific outlet visited by the individual.
The viral post, garnering over 459,000 views, featured a comment lamenting the steep cost of £2 for a single hash brown, leading to a declaration of being “officially done.” Responses flooded in, with one person remarking on the drastic price increase, highlighting the hash brown’s previous affordability. Another commenter suggested opting for a sausage sandwich at the same price point, emphasizing the perceived value disparity.
Expressing disappointment at the £2 price tag, another individual praised the hash brown’s taste while deeming the new price excessive. Nostalgia kicked in for another commentator recalling the days when the hash browns were priced at 59p.
A spokesperson from McDonald’s clarified that many of their restaurants are independently owned and operated by franchisees who have the authority to set prices, leading to variations in pricing across locations. However, they emphasized the commitment to delivering a quality dining experience and value for customers.
The discussion arose following McDonald’s announcement of adjustments to the MyMcDonald’s Rewards program, where the points required to redeem free items will increase. Currently, items like a Big Mac or Chicken Nuggets require 5,500 points, but starting March 17, the threshold will rise to 6,500 points. Points accumulation stands at 100 points for every £1 spent at McDonald’s.
Furthermore, the point requirements for various menu items will see an increase, with items like a Medium Coffee or Small Fries rising from 1,500 to 2,000 points. The threshold for a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will surge from 2,500 to 3,500 points, and for a Double Cheeseburger or McChicken sandwich, the points needed will climb to 5,000 from 4,000.
McDonald’s representatives stated that the loyalty scheme adjustments were prompted by escalating food and supply costs. Despite the increase in points required, they introduced a range of popular items for redemption, including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and a new Sausage Sandwich, providing customers with more choices.
