“MI5 Warns UK Parliament: Chinese Spies Targeting Westminster”

Must read

MI5 has raised an urgent alarm to Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding multiple attempts made by Chinese spies to “recruit and nurture” insiders within the Westminster circle.

During a session in the Commons, Security Minister Dan Jarvis disclosed that Chinese intelligence operatives are posing as companies or external recruiters to entice MPs, Lords, and Parliamentary personnel. It has come to light that they are utilizing LinkedIn profiles under false identities to gather information covertly.

Addressing a surprised audience of MPs, Jarvis stated, “Today, MI5 issued a warning to the members of this House, along with members of the Lords and Parliamentary staff, regarding the continuous targeting of our democratic institutions by Chinese operatives.”

He cautioned that China has a broad view of what constitutes valuable information, emphasizing that their intelligence agencies have identified ongoing efforts to engage individuals with access to sensitive data concerning Parliament and the UK government. MI5 has confirmed that this scheme is orchestrated by a group of Chinese intelligence officers, often camouflaged through front companies or external recruitment agencies.

“It is not just lawmakers who should be vigilant,” Jarvis remarked, “but also parliamentary staff, economists, think tank professionals, geopolitical advisors, and government officials, all of whom have been sought after for their connections and access to policymakers.”

In response to the situation, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has engaged with her Chinese counterpart, affirming a zero-tolerance policy towards such activities. Jarvis announced that the government plans to address clandestine political funding to eliminate potential espionage risks and is working on enhancing measures to counter foreign interference.

The Speaker of the Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, notified MPs on Tuesday about the attempts by the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) to establish connections within Westminster. The MSS aims to gather intelligence and establish long-term relationships through professional networking platforms, recruitment agencies, and consultants acting on their behalf.

The alert specifically identified two recruiters, Amanda Qiu from BR-YR Executive Search and Shirly Shen from Internship Union, who are known to be using LinkedIn to establish contacts on behalf of China’s MSS.

The MI5 alert emphasized that the MSS is actively seeking sensitive information on the UK to gain strategic advantages and outlined the typical tradecraft and techniques employed by a specific group of highly active officers.

Jarvis disclosed that £170 million will be allocated to upgrade the secure encrypted technology used by officials, with an additional £130 million earmarked to bolster the UK’s defenses against threats posed by countries like China.
