“Barnsley Leads UK in School Holiday Fines Surge”

Must read

In a recent report, it has been disclosed that Barnsley, an English town, holds the title for the highest number of students going on holidays during term time. The surge in holiday penalties has reached a peak, with a record-breaking 459,288 school holiday fines issued across England last year, representing a four percent increase from the previous year. These fines, which rose from £60 to £80 per parent and child per holiday, accounted for 93 percent of all fines for unauthorized school absences.

Barnsley, in particular, topped the charts in 2024/25 with 5,275 fines issued to parents for unapproved family holidays, translating to 1,672 fines for every 10,000 pupils. The region has become known as the holiday fines hub of England due to these statistics.

The increase in penalty notices has sparked varied opinions among parents. Jodie Salt from Cheshire emphasized the educational value her children gain from travel experiences compared to traditional classroom learning. On the other hand, an anonymous parent shared their struggle with paying fines but highlighted the educational benefits of taking their children on a holiday during term time.

While taking children out of school during term time can disrupt teachers and the educational routine, some argue against blanket fines for all instances. Cllr Ashley Peace of Barnsley stressed the importance of maintaining school attendance to prevent learning gaps, while a Department for Education spokesperson emphasized the significance of fines in ensuring accountability for school attendance.

The debate on school holiday fines continues, with some parents advocating for more flexibility in allowing term-time holidays for families with good attendance records. Ultimately, the discussion revolves around balancing educational needs with the desire for affordable family travel experiences.
