In a surprising turn of events, a lawmaker who had been a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump has announced her resignation from Congress. Marjorie Taylor Greene, known for her close ties to Mr. Trump, cited her desire to avoid a contentious primary election against her by the former president.
In a ten-minute video explaining her decision to step down in January, the 51-year-old emphasized her self-respect and love for her family, stating that she did not want her district to face a divisive primary battle fueled by Mr. Trump. She expressed her refusal to continue supporting the ex-president, likening the situation to being a “battered wife.”
Ms. Greene, who previously made controversial remarks towards a Sky News journalist, had been a prominent supporter of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement and actively backed Mr. Trump during his 2020 election campaign. However, recent disagreements with the former president over various issues, including Jeffrey Epstein, foreign policy, and healthcare, led to a public fallout.
Despite being labeled a “traitor” and facing opposition from Mr. Trump, Ms. Greene revealed that she would leave office on January 5, 2026. Her decision to resign in the face of opposition aligns her with other establishment Republicans who clashed with the former president. These Republicans, like Ms. Greene, had initially embraced Mr. Trump’s bold political style and charisma.
Meanwhile, Mr. Trump has faced scrutiny following a controversial meeting with Zohran Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City, who visited Washington after his election victory. The White House has not yet responded to inquiries regarding Ms. Greene’s resignation.
