“Authorities Seize £250K Worth of Illegal Weight-Loss Injections”

Must read

Authorities in Northampton have seized over 2,000 counterfeit weight-loss injections from an illicit factory, with an estimated value of £250,000.

In a joint operation, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and Northamptonshire Police conducted a raid on the facility, marking it as the largest seizure of weight loss medication globally.

The confiscated pens contained tirzepatide, a primary component of legally manufactured drugs like Mounjaro and Zepbound by Eli Lilly. Additionally, the pens contained retratutide, an experimental weight-loss substance not yet authorized for use. Eli Lilly cautioned that consumers purchasing these unauthorized injections would be unaware of their actual contents.

Aside from the counterfeit injections, authorities also seized raw materials, thousands of empty pens awaiting filling, and £20,000 in cash.

A spokesperson from the MHRA described the operation as uncovering the UK’s first illegal weight-loss drug production facility and the largest single seizure of trafficked weight loss medications by any law enforcement agency worldwide. The combined street value of the illicit weight loss products exceeded £250,000.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting commended the crackdown on criminals endangering lives by selling unlawful weight-loss injections for profit. He cautioned against purchasing weight loss products from unregulated sources and advised consulting healthcare professionals for safe alternatives.

Andy Morling, leading the MHRA’s criminal enforcement unit, emphasized the risks posed by unregulated weight-loss products and urged the public to obtain prescription medicines solely from licensed pharmacies under medical supervision.

No arrests have been reported in connection with the seizure, as per Pharmacy Magazine. Weight-loss injections are strictly available through the NHS for eligible patients.
