“Labour supporter launches kids’ phone plan sans internet”

Must read

A philanthropic supporter of the Labour party has taken proactive steps ahead of potential government actions to restrict children’s use of social media platforms. Dale Vince, a prominent figure, criticized tech magnates Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg for what he described as their unrestricted influence on young individuals.

Responding to parents’ primary concern, the founder of Ecotricity, a renewable energy company, has introduced a mobile plan that enables children to make unlimited calls and send texts but prohibits internet access. The wealthy entrepreneur emphasized the necessity of this traditional-style plan due to the harmful online content children are exposed to, urging government officials to take decisive measures.

Amid mounting pressure on the government to implement a ban on social media access for individuals under 16, over 60 Labour MPs recently petitioned Prime Minister Keir Starmer to follow Australia’s lead, where such a ban was enforced in December. Various other nations are reportedly contemplating similar regulations, with Sir Keir keeping the option open.

One of Mr. Vince’s enterprises, Ecotalk, which operates on EE’s mobile network, has launched a new SIM-only plan named Just Talk, offering unlimited calls and texts starting from £4 per month. Notably, this plan distinguishes itself from most competitors by excluding internet access.

Mr. Vince expressed, “We’ve introduced a Just Talk tariff to counter the unrestricted access that Musk and Zuckerberg have to our children. Our customers, especially parents, have voiced this as their top priority: a communication device that keeps them connected without online distractions. This initiative redefines the purpose of phones and allows children to be children again, addressing the issue of irresponsible tech platforms exposing young individuals to undue pressures and risks.”

He added, “Instead of waiting for governmental action, we are taking immediate steps with our kids SIM. We are safeguarding children from the influence of tech moguls.” Established in 2018 by Mr. Vince, Ecotalk collaborates with renowned presenter Chris Packham, who serves as the chief ecologist, to initiate rewilding, restoration, and replanting projects in Sussex and Devon.
