“Cowardly Attacker Released Despite Brutal Assault”

Must read

A man described as ‘cowardly’ has been released from court following his sentencing for a brutal attack on his former girlfriend, during which he forcefully inserted his thumbs into her eyes.

Layton Bowman, a 20-year-old resident of Blurton, Stoke-on-Trent, assaulted his ex-partner by strangling her, threatening her with a knife after she disclosed her intention to end their relationship. Subsequently, upon his arrest the next day, he spat at a police officer and was found in possession of cannabis. While in police custody, Bowman further displayed disruptive behavior by urinating in his cell.

Despite receiving a nine-month prison sentence at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Bowman was immediately released due to time served while awaiting trial. He admitted to charges including assault, intentional strangulation, weapon threats, possession of cannabis, assaulting an emergency worker, and causing damage to property.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Bowman aggressively confronted his ex-girlfriend at her residence, making derogatory remarks and physically assaulting her. He also returned to her home on a subsequent occasion and continued his aggressive behavior, resulting in his arrest after resisting officers and spitting at them.

In a statement, Bowman’s defense lawyer, Steve Hennessy, indicated that Bowman has reflected on his actions and expressed remorse for his behavior. Hennessy mentioned that Bowman aims to secure employment soon and has distanced himself from negative influences.

The presiding judge, Recorder Robert Smith, chastised Bowman for his violent actions towards his ex-partner, highlighting his attempts to control and intimidate her. Smith warned Bowman about the consequences of his behavior and urged him to reform, emphasizing that continued misconduct could lead to a longer prison sentence in the future. Despite expressing a desire to impose a lengthier incarceration period, the judge cited legal constraints and the time already spent in custody as reasons for Bowman’s immediate release.
