Easter is a time I look forward to for baking, especially when it involves using Cadbury Mini Eggs. These delightful treats are a must-have ingredient for my Easter-themed creations, be it making Easter nests or whipping up a cheesecake.
Recently, with the rising grocery prices, I was curious to know exactly how many Mini Eggs are included in each bag. Opting for the 74g bag, which is commonly found in stores, I was surprised to find out that these bags typically cost £2 at Tesco, which I found quite expensive.
Fortunately, during my visit, I discovered that they were available at a discounted Clubcard Price of £1.45 per bag. However, I still thought that the price was on the higher side for what you get.
To address my curiosity about the value for money, I decided to buy six packets of Cadbury Mini Eggs and count the eggs in each packet. Although I assumed that each bag would contain the same number of eggs since they were all 74g, I was amazed to find out that this was not the case.
The first packet contained 22 eggs, translating to around 9p per egg at full price, which I found quite expensive considering their small size. The second and third packets had 23 eggs each, while the fourth packet had 22.5 eggs due to one egg being broken in half. The missing half was nowhere to be found.
The fifth and sixth packets also contained 23 eggs each, which I still believed did not justify the £2 price tag. Despite my love for baking with Cadbury’s Mini Eggs during Easter, the high cost of these eggs makes it quite pricey to create Easter treats. This increase in chocolate prices is attributed to poor harvests and the need for manufacturers to maintain profit margins.
In response to these escalating costs, some chocolate bars, including Club and Penguin bars, now label themselves as “chocolate flavoured” after reducing cocoa content. Thankfully, there are own-label alternatives available at supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl.
M&S’s Speckled Eggs, priced at £2.75 for a 150g bag, have received positive reviews online and on Ocado. Despite Cadbury’s Mini Eggs being a staple in many kitchens, I personally will not be purchasing them in the near future due to the high cost.
