A recent survey revealed that 30% of British individuals feel their homes lack sufficient space for all their possessions. The study of 2,000 adults highlighted that 44% are dealing with high levels of clutter, causing stress. Furthermore, 26% admitted that the chaotic state of their homes hinders them from inviting guests over.
The research also found that on average, people repurpose two rooms in their houses for storage due to overcrowding. Items such as excess clothing, paperwork stacks, and unused travel bags were identified as the primary clutter culprits.
Interestingly, while 90% of respondents have a loft, they only access it around six times annually or, for some, never at all. This underutilization was evident in real estate experiences, as 41% were not shown the loft during property viewings, and only 31% confirmed its inclusion in the floor plan.
In response to these findings, Loftzone is advocating for a change in the industry. They urge estate agents to incorporate usable lofts in property listings and collaborate with developers like Shanly Homes to install raised boarding systems in new homes. Dave Raval, CEO of LoftZone, emphasized the potential of lofts as valuable, yet often overlooked, spaces within British homes.
Many individuals primarily utilize their lofts during festive periods, with 27% accessing them solely for holiday decorations. Concerns about dust, inaccessibility, or pest infestations deter some from maximizing their loft space year-round.
When asked about motivations to optimize loft space, respondents cited the need for additional storage, improved energy efficiency, and increased property value. On average, participants believed a functional loft could add £8326 to their home’s worth, with men estimating a slightly higher value than women.
The significance of storage space was underscored, as 61% stated it would influence their decision to purchase a property. This aligns with the preference of 88% of individuals who prioritize storage when house hunting.
Raval recommended simple enhancements like deep insulation and raised boarding to transform lofts into practical, energy-efficient areas. Neglecting the potential of loft spaces, he emphasized, is akin to discarding a valuable room that could add substantial value to a property.
