A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court for viciously stabbing a woman in the vagina in what was deemed a misogynistic and depraved attack by the judge. The culprit, who was 21 at the time of the assault, pleaded guilty to causing serious harm to the victim at a city center flat on March 6, 2024.
The court was informed that the defendant had 15 prior convictions and was out on bail when he committed the heinous act. Judge Pauline Codd imposed a 10-year prison sentence, with one year suspended, stating that it was one of the most depraved attacks she had encountered. The sentence was backdated to consider time already spent in custody.
Police officers, responding to a disturbance, found the victim bleeding heavily from her genital area on a second-floor balcony. The officers apprehended the defendant and three others at the scene. The victim reported being attacked by four individuals, with one wielding a knife, resulting in multiple stab wounds to her groin area.
Further investigations led to the recovery of bloodstained knives, one of which was linked to the defendant through a Snapchat voice note discussing the attack. CCTV footage captured the movements of the assailants to a nearby apartment block, where they arrived armed and masked. Medical reports revealed the victim suffered severe lacerations and may have difficulties with natural childbirth and sexual intercourse in the future.
The defense acknowledged the defendant’s guilty plea and highlighted his challenging upbringing, bipolar disorder, and ADHD. The defendant expressed remorse and is undergoing rehabilitation programs while in custody. The judge emphasized the seriousness of the crime, the defendant’s lack of cooperation, and the premeditated nature of the attack. She described the assault as deeply misogynistic and condemned the defendant’s actions.
