Must read

Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad residing in Toronto, decided to enter an international whistling contest after hearing about it on a BBC quiz show. Initially, he didn’t take it seriously, assuming it was just a lighthearted event. However, after signing up with his daughter Sumire, they found themselves selected to compete at the Masters of Musical Whistling event in Los Angeles.

Both Ben and Sumire had a knack for whistling, a skill passed down from Ben’s parents to him and then to Sumire. Encouraged by their talent, they dedicated time to practice daily, leading to their acceptance into the competition. As they prepared for the event, they received coaching from the renowned organizer Carole Anne Kaufman, also known as the Whistling Diva.

The realization that they were entering a serious competition hit Ben after a feedback session with Carole, who highlighted areas for improvement. Determined to excel, Ben and Sumire committed to rigorous practice sessions, culminating in their journey to Hollywood for the competition.

At the Masters of Musical Whistling event, they were surrounded by exceptionally talented contestants from around the world, each showcasing their unique whistling abilities. Ben and Sumire took the stage, with Sumire winning silver in the kids’ category and Ben clinching gold in the level one adults’ category.

The experience was transformative for Ben, who reflected on his past ironic detachment and embraced the joy of genuinely caring about something. Despite his initial reservations, the competition allowed him to appreciate the sincerity and passion of the participants, leading to a newfound sense of accomplishment and pride.

Their success at the event underscored the importance of embracing passions wholeheartedly, even if it may seem unconventional or vulnerable. Ben’s journey from ironic detachment to genuine enthusiasm highlighted the power of authenticity and dedication in pursuing what truly matters.
