“Toronto Woman Shares Journey as Autistic Brother’s Caregiver”

Must read

Simone Abrahamsohn, residing in Toronto, shared her experience of taking on the role of her older brother’s primary caregiver following their mother’s passing this summer. Juggling the responsibilities of caregiving and creating a harmonious living environment for two neurodivergent siblings in their middle age has been a challenging yet rewarding journey for her.

Her brother, Stuart, who is autistic and a left-brain stem stroke survivor, requires specialized care due to his physical and emotional needs. Despite the challenges, Simone finds joy in Stuart’s company, appreciating his infectious laughter, love for pistachio milkshakes, and interest in violinist podcasts. Their shared living space is not without its hurdles, including Stuart’s need for assistance with daily tasks like feeding, transfers, and personal care, as well as coping with emotional lability triggered by loud noises.

Reflecting on their childhood, Simone recalls feeling embarrassed by Stuart’s autism, especially when others misunderstood his behaviors. As an adult, she acknowledges the similarities in their neurodivergent experiences, with her own struggles in managing ADHD. Learning to navigate their differences and create a supportive environment has been a transformative process for both siblings.

Simone emphasizes the importance of understanding and acceptance in their relationship, noting the need to balance her own needs with Stuart’s care. Despite sacrifices like giving up extracurricular activities due to caregiving responsibilities, she finds fulfillment in fostering a positive living arrangement for both of them. Through open communication, mutual respect, and seeking outside support when needed, Simone is committed to providing a nurturing environment for herself and Stuart as they navigate their unique challenges together.
