“Roblox Faces Financial Decline Amid User Shifts”

Must read

Roblox is experiencing a significant decline in its financial performance compared to previous years. The well-known gaming platform has witnessed a market value decrease of about $97.5 billion Cdn over the past year, as indicated by stock market data. While the company attributes this downturn to shifts in user game preferences and challenges in appealing to older gamers, experts suggest there may be other underlying factors at play.

Aaron Langille, who oversees the game design and simulation program at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ont., commented, “I think there’s actually a lot of things going on. I think it’s sort of a platform getting a little bit older, and maybe making some decisions that didn’t work out.”

The stock price of Roblox Corporation has plummeted by around 70 percent compared to the same period last year, dropping from $129.63 US ($180.67 Cdn) to $36.96 US ($51.51 Cdn). This decline followed a recent earnings call where company executives reported revenue below expectations.

For those unfamiliar with it, Roblox is a gaming platform that allows users to play games created by other users. Launched in 2006, the platform has grown to encompass 151.5 million daily users and 3.5 million game developers, according to company data. Roblox offers a variety of games such as racing, obstacle courses, shooters, platformers, and board games, with the majority being multiplayer.

The platform primarily attracts younger gamers. Roblox introduced identity and age verification earlier this year, revealing that 35 percent of daily active users under verification were younger than 13, and 38 percent were between 13 and 17 years old, demonstrating that over half of its active players are minors.

CEO David Baszucki and CFO Naveen Chopra acknowledged last week that Roblox fell short of its user spending targets this year, particularly among those under 13. They attributed this shortfall to changes in the platform’s game recommendation algorithm and the shift in popularity towards less profitable games compared to previous hits.

Concerns have been raised about the safety of young users on Roblox, given its text and voice communication features. The platform is striving to attract older gamers while facing scrutiny from authorities and experts. The RCMP reported over 1,000 incidents involving Roblox between 2024 and 2025. Additionally, a tragic incident in February 2025 involved a 16-year-old Vancouver resident who took her life after interacting with a harmful online group on Roblox.

To address safety issues, Roblox reached an agreement with Nevada to enhance online safety measures for young users and allocated over $10 million US towards safety initiatives. Yulia Nevskaya, an assistant professor of marketing at Queen’s University, suggested that safety concerns and recent age verification rules might contribute to a decline in user base and game developers’ participation.

Despite the recent challenges, Baszucki and Chopra highlighted positive developments during the earnings call. They noted improvements in user retention due to algorithm changes and growth in international markets like Japan and India. Baszucki remains optimistic about the platform’s future, emphasizing the importance of increased user retention and growth, especially among older gamers.

Cristiano Politowski, an assistant professor of computer science at Ontario Tech University, highlighted Roblox’s unique position in having control over its gaming platform. Politowski suggested that the company’s strategic changes may be part of a long-term plan for success.

However, despite Roblox’s enduring popularity, it may be facing difficulties in attracting new players as its user base evolves. Langille remarked on the challenges faced by the platform in adapting to changing player preferences and maintaining its appeal to both existing and prospective users.
