“Calgary Zoo Grizzly Bear Escapade Safely Resolved”

Must read

A grizzly bear at the Calgary Zoo ventured outside its enclosure briefly, prompting an emergency response. Fitz, a one-year-old bear, exited his habitat early Sunday morning, according to a spokesperson from the Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo. The zoo’s teams, including animal care and security units, and the Calgary Police Service quickly intervened to safely relocate Fitz without any injuries to visitors, staff, volunteers, or other animals.

The incident occurred before the zoo opened to the public, leading to a temporary closure of the Wild Canada area where the bears reside for a thorough assessment. The area reopened later in the day after ensuring safety measures. The zoo will conduct a review of the situation as part of standard post-incident procedures.

Staff Sgt. John Guigon of the Calgary Police Service confirmed that there was no danger to the public during the bear’s escapade. The bear was calmly tranquilized by zoo personnel after a leisurely stroll around the zoo. Fitz and his brother Turner were orphaned cubs brought to the zoo last year after their mother’s unfortunate demise near Diamond Valley.

The zoo has a history with bears, including polar bears, with a commitment to upholding new standards. Police officers were present at the scene but maintained a standby position as the zoo managed the situation peacefully. Despite initial concerns, the bear seemed more interested in exploring than causing harm.
