A forthcoming investment summit in Toronto, organized by Prime Minister Mark Carney, will feature 167 potential investment opportunities, including a floating LNG terminal on B.C.’s coast, a high-speed rail line between Edmonton and Calgary, and a pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific Ocean. The detailed 66-page “prospectus” obtained by CBC News outlines these projects, aiming to attract $1 trillion in investment from international investors and Canadian business leaders. Invitations have been extended to major investment firms and sovereign wealth funds to diversify investment amid trade tensions and geopolitical uncertainties, notably with the U.S.
The investment opportunities are categorized into 8 sectors: conventional energy, clean energy, mining and metals, marine and port infrastructure, power and utilities, digital technology, advanced manufacturing, and transportation. Projects vary in stages of development and capital requirements. Noteworthy projects include a $57 billion US Port of Churchill expansion, a $44 billion investment in Nova Scotia’s Wind West offshore wind project, a $35 billion West Coast oil pipeline, and a $28.5 billion Ksi Lisims LNG terminal project.
Notable absences from the list are the Alto high-speed rail project and airport privatization plans. Some projects, like Ksi Lisims, are “shovel ready,” while others are in the early stages of assessment. The prospectus details plans for the Port of Churchill expansion and a high-speed rail line between Calgary and Edmonton. Additionally, it covers oil and gas sector projects, such as a proposed oil pipeline and a pipeline expansion for Canadian crude transportation to U.S. markets.
The document also highlights a $28.5 billion pitch for a floating LNG export facility on the B.C. coast and clean energy proposals, including nuclear power generation, carbon capture, and wind power projects across Canada. Moreover, Canada’s AI sector is showcased, with investment opportunities in data centers and quantum computing technology.
