Atlanta Falcons’ James Pearce Jr., a prominent edge rusher, will face an eight-game suspension at the start of the 2026 season due to a breach of the league’s personal conduct regulations, as per an announcement by the NFL on Friday.
The suspension stems from an incident in February when Pearce was arrested following a domestic altercation with his former girlfriend, WNBA player Rickea Jackson, in Doral, Florida. The charges against Pearce include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, evading law enforcement, resisting arrest, and misdemeanor stalking. These charges may be dismissed if Pearce complies with a pretrial intervention program, which mandates random drug screenings, maintaining distance from Jackson, and staying clear of legal issues for one year.
Until his suspension becomes effective on August 30, Pearce remains eligible to participate in pre-season matches and team activities. He can potentially return to action on Monday, November 2, after the Falcons’ Week 8 away game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with the team then facing the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid, Spain.
The Falcons’ defensive lineup has faced setbacks recently, notably due to Jalon Walker’s season-ending ACL injury. The remaining core includes Christian Harris, JD Bertrand, Samson Ebukam, Kendal Daniels, and Bralen Trice, with the addition of Cameron Sample following Walker’s injury.
Pearce, drafted by Atlanta after trading back to the No. 26 pick in the first round of the 2025 draft, made a significant impact in his rookie season, leading the team with 10 1/2 sacks.
In a broader context, Pearce’s suspension was one of four handed out by the NFL on Friday. Dorance Armstrong of the Commanders received a one-game suspension for breaching the personal conduct policy, causing him to miss the team’s season opener against Philadelphia on September 13. Meanwhile, Nazeeh Johnson of the Tennessee Titans faces a six-game suspension for violating performance-enhancing substance regulations, and Phidarian Mathis of the Buffalo Bills received a three-game suspension for breaching substance abuse policies.
The affected players are permitted to practice and play with their respective teams until August 30, the deadline for NFL teams to finalize their 53-player rosters. Johnson is set to return for the Titans’ match against Cleveland on October 25, while Mathis could be back for Buffalo’s game against New England on October 4.
Johnson, with three seasons of NFL experience, joined the Titans on July 27 and previously played for the Kansas City Chiefs. Mathis, 28, played six games for the Bills last season after featuring in 23 games for Washington in his initial three NFL seasons.
