“Beware of Cheap Chargers: Risks for Android & iPhone Users”

Must read

An urgent warning has been issued to individuals owning an Android or iPhone device, emphasizing the importance of avoiding unofficial power packs for charging batteries. With the trend of new devices being sold without chargers, consumers are often compelled to seek affordable alternatives. While unauthorized chargers can be found at lower prices on online platforms like Amazon, consumer watchdog Which? has raised concerns about the safety risks associated with these cheaper options.

Which? conducted a study involving various chargers purchased from online marketplaces including Amazon, AliExpress, B&Q Marketplace, Debenhams Marketplace, and eBay. The investigation revealed alarming findings: nine chargers were identified as posing an electric shock hazard due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were flagged as potential fire or explosion risks.

In one instance, an £11.99 plug closely resembling an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter was found to be a counterfeit product that failed safety tests, despite its packaging displaying Apple’s branding. Additionally, some chargers lacked mandatory UK safety markings and exhibited hazardous internal circuitry designs that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions.

This is not the first time that Which? has expressed concerns about the sale of unsafe electrical goods on online marketplaces. Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences of poorly designed electrical products and called for stronger product safety regulations and enforcement measures for online platforms.

In response to the findings, Amazon reassured customers of its commitment to safety and noted its collaboration with Electrical Safety First to promote safe charging practices. The company stated that all products on its platform must comply with laws and regulations, and indicated that the flagged chargers had been removed. B&Q also reiterated its dedication to product safety and affirmed proactive measures to prevent the listing of recalled items on its Marketplace.

Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from authorized retailers or reputable brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks. While these products may come at a higher cost initially, experts caution that the potential dangers associated with cheaper alternatives outweigh any savings.
