Mini Eggs are a personal favorite of mine. Thankfully, they are not available year-round, or I would spend a significant amount satisfying my craving. However, during Easter, they are the perfect chocolate treat with their delightful aroma, satisfying crunch, and charming pastel colors.
As a popular brand, Mini Eggs are not always affordable and can be challenging to find during the Easter season. To explore budget-friendly alternatives, I decided to sample various supermarket own-brand versions. Leading supermarkets like Aldi, Lidl, M&S, and Asda offer their own versions of this beloved Easter treat, all at more economical prices compared to the original Mini Eggs.
After purchasing a bag of Cadbury’s Mini Eggs for comparison, I acquired similar-sized packs from each supermarket. One standout bag surpassed the others in taste and quality, even outshining the original. I plan to stock up on this particular brand before Easter arrives.
Starting with the authentic Cadbury Mini Eggs, the familiar sugary aroma upon opening the packet was a delight. The crispy texture and heavenly chocolate center make them a popular choice. However, as Easter nears, these original Mini Eggs may become harder to find in stores, priced around £2 for an 80g pack.
Transitioning to Asda’s own-brand milk chocolate mini eggs, priced at just £1.12 for an 80g pack, they offer a more affordable option compared to Cadbury. Although the taste was less premium, lacking the same sweet fragrance and smoothness, they still provided a decent alternative, earning a score of 2.5/5 in my evaluation.
The Mister Choc eggs, priced at £1.15 for an 80g pack, presented a budget-friendly option but fell short in comparison to the original Mini Eggs. Despite a pleasant taste, they scored a mere one out of five in my rating.
Aldi and Lidl’s versions, while not as hard as expected, also did not match the taste of the original. The Choceur Mini Eggs from Aldi, priced at £3.39 for 256g, offered a mid-tier option with a slightly bland chocolate taste, earning a score of two out of five.
M&S’s speckled egg biscuits and chocolate bars have been trending on social media. Trying their Mini Eggs for the first time, I was impressed by their size and addictive taste, which surpassed even Cadbury’s. Priced at £1.79 for a 90g bag, they provide a solid alternative to Cadbury’s Mini Eggs, receiving a perfect five-star rating from me.
Overall, exploring supermarket own-brand alternatives to Mini Eggs revealed varying levels of quality and taste, with some brands offering more affordable options without compromising on flavor.
