Must read

A significant motorway in the UK has been completely closed overnight and into the morning hours due to a car accident that triggered a substantial response from emergency services.

The closure of the M6 in both directions commenced around 10 pm last night following a severe crash. The incident occurred between junctions 27 and 28 near Standish, Greater Manchester, with police and paramedics present at the scene.

Lancashire Police have verified the involvement of two vehicles in the collision but have not disclosed additional details. Authorities are currently conducting collision investigation activities at the site.

A full closure is currently enforced along with alternative routes provided for drivers to navigate. Lancashire Police released a statement this morning concerning the incident.

Ongoing investigations are being conducted following the two-vehicle collision. The police force mentioned, “The M6 remains closed between J27 (Standish) and J28 (Leyland) due to a collision yesterday and will continue to be shut for a while, including during rush hour.”

Authorities indicated that the collision took place near Charnock Richard services on the Southbound carriageway and urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations are ongoing.

Delays on the M6 northbound have extended to 130 minutes, with National Highways cautioning drivers about potential delays of over 100 minutes. The M6 closure between J28 and J27 remains in effect, with delays exceeding 60 minutes on approach.

National Highways reported that the motorway closure persists in both directions for investigation purposes following a serious collision the previous night. All traffic within the closure areas has been released, with recovery and cleanup operations scheduled to follow.

Lancashire Police shared an update on social media, advising the public of the road closure and emphasizing the ongoing investigation into the collision involving emergency services.

Drivers are directed to follow specific diversion routes marked with designated symbols on local road signs to navigate around the closed sections of the M6. The closure is expected to cause disruptions throughout the night, with both directions closed between J28 Leyland and J27 Wigan.

National Highways confirmed that the incident occurred on the southbound carriageway, prompting the response of police and Traffic Officers to the scene. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly to accommodate possible delays or rerouting.
