The Ottawa Redblacks have set a new record in the CFL, enduring their 15th consecutive defeat, making it the longest losing streak in modern CFL history. This surpasses the previous record held by the Shreveport Pirates in 1994. Steve Daniel, a CFL historian, confirmed this, labeling it as the modern-day record.
Following their recent loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Redblacks fans, including Jimmy Fata, expressed disappointment over the team’s performance. The team’s struggles have been evident, with Fata mentioning the lack of touchdowns and the tradition of cutting wood cookies for each score at home games.
The losing streak now ranks as the third-longest in the entire CFL record book, dating back to 1907. Another loss to the Montreal Alouettes could tie them with the Hamilton Wildcats for the second spot in consecutive losses. Despite this, the record for the longest losing streak belongs to two Ottawa CFL clubs from 1928 to 1932.
Daniel highlighted the evolution of the league post-World War II, emphasizing the professionalization of football in Canada. The Wildcats, a short-lived team, faced their own challenges and only managed to win one game. Looking ahead, Daniel suggested a continued roster rebuild for the Redblacks, especially focusing on defense.
Despite the struggles, Fata stressed the importance of unwavering support for the team through thick and thin. He remains optimistic about the team’s future and urges fans to stand by them during these difficult times.
