The Milano Cortina Winter Olympics encountered a power outage just 10 minutes after its commencement, causing a temporary halt to the events. The opening games, starting with curling, were interrupted by the sudden loss of lights at the Olympic Ice Stadium.
The disruption occurred during the mixed doubles round robin matches, affecting the match between Britain’s Bruce Mouat and Jen Dodds against Norway. Despite the delay, Dodds maintained a cheerful demeanor, even finding humor in the situation while officials worked to resolve the issue.
BBC commentator Steve Cram, amused by the incident, noted the power cut at the stadium, leading to a pause in play due to the scoring screens going dark. However, the crowd reacted positively as the lights were swiftly restored after a brief delay of about five minutes.
Dodds and Mouat went on to secure an 8-6 victory, kicking off the round robin phase on a high note. Mouat shrugged off the unexpected interruption, describing it as a fun and lively moment amidst the competition.
UK Sport aims for an impressive medal haul at the Winter Games with continued investment supported by the National Lottery and government funding. With over £32.5m invested in the current four-year cycle, the goal is to strengthen the UK’s presence in winter sports.
