The Chancellor defended her decision to extend the freeze on income tax thresholds until 2031, leading to over 1.5 million individuals facing potential tax increases as their incomes rise.
Prior to the General Election, the Labour party had promised not to raise taxes for working individuals, with Reeves previously criticizing threshold freezes. In a fiery exchange, Reeves rebuffed Reform leader Nigel Farage’s assertion that the Budget was detrimental to ambition, asserting that the government supports aspiration. She also pointed out the importance of addressing internal party issues, especially in light of the incarceration of former Reform Welsh leader Nathan Gill for accepting Russian bribes.
During multiple intense interviews following the Budget announcement, Reeves faced questions about upholding Labour’s manifesto. When pressed by GMB host Susanna Reid about credibility, Reeves justified her decision by citing the current economic climate and the need to adapt to new circumstances.
