Rachael Blackmore, the retired racing icon, has revealed that she is pregnant with her first child alongside her fellow jockey, Brian Hayes. The couple recently got married in a small ceremony in West Cork on January 5 after knowing each other for more than a decade.
Announcing the delightful news on her Instagram story, Rachael shared a picture of her Volvo car with a baby pram in the boot, playfully mentioning the change in boot contents. The 36-year-old retired from horse racing last year, making history as the first female jockey to win the Grand National and be named the leading jockey at Cheltenham.
Originally from Tipperary, Rachael achieved an impressive total of 575 wins during her professional racing career. She retired in May last year following her remarkable partnership with Minella Times, securing victory at Aintree in 2021.
In addition to her accomplishments, Rachael excelled at the Cheltenham Festival in 2021, winning a total of 18 races, including the prestigious Champion Hurdle and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Her outstanding performances earned her the World Sports Star award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
Rachael and Brian, who have been friends for over ten years, first met at a stable in Co Carlow early in their careers. Despite both being jockeys, the couple seldom discuss racing in their household. Rachael expressed gratitude to Brian for his significant support throughout her career when she retired last May.
The couple has been seen together at various events, including Wimbledon, music festivals, and vacations. Brian, aged 34, has had a successful 17-year career, winning one race at the Cheltenham Festival and riding for renowned figures such as Willie Mullins.
