Robin Williams’s children have taken steps to reactivate their late father’s Instagram account in response to unauthorized AI representations of him that have surfaced recently.
The renowned actor and comedian passed away on August 11, 2014, at the age of 63 due to Lewy body dementia, as confirmed by an autopsy report.
In a recent post on Monday, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their intention to maintain their father’s Instagram account as a secure platform for sharing genuine stories, photos, videos, and memories that accurately reflect his legacy with sincerity and warmth. This post marked the first activity on the “therobinwilliams” Instagram account since July 31, 2014.
The Williams siblings emphasized their desire to showcase their father’s unique talent and humor to the world, sharing moments that brought laughter to them and countless others, while honoring his remarkable life and work. They highlighted how Robin Williams continues to be a source of inspiration and joy for people worldwide.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning film, television, and stage, Robin Williams achieved significant success. He gained initial fame through his role in the television sitcom “Mork & Mindy” (1978-82) and went on to star in iconic films such as “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), and “Jumanji” (1995). His exceptional talent earned him an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance in “Good Will Hunting” (1997) and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin” (1992).
Recently, AI-generated videos featuring Robin Williams have emerged online, depicting him in various scenarios such as podcasts, stand-up comedy acts, motivational speeches, and even discussing dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.” Many of these videos were created utilizing OpenAI’s video production and social media application, Sora.
However, OpenAI discontinued Sora in March following objections from family estates, including the Williams family, due to the misuse of the app to generate inappropriate videos of public figures like Michael Jackson, Mister Rogers, and Martin Luther King Jr.
Zelda Williams, an accomplished actor and director, has been vocal in her opposition to AI recreations of her father. She publicly denounced the dissemination of AI-generated videos featuring Robin Williams, describing them as “disgusting” and contrary to what her father would have desired. In an Instagram story, she explained that revitalizing her father’s Instagram account serves as a countermeasure against widespread AI exploitation of his likeness and voice on the platform.
Although actor Matthew Lawrence, who starred alongside Robin Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” expressed interest in using AI to bring back Williams’s voice for a special project, he emphasized the necessity of obtaining permission from the Williams family prior to proceeding.
Similarly, Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., has also condemned the use of AI to replicate her father’s image and voice, highlighting the ethical concerns surrounding such practices.
The upcoming film “As Deep As the Grave” will feature an AI version of the late actor Val Kilmer, who passed away last year at the age of 65. Kilmer’s estate granted permission for his digital recreation in the film and is receiving compensation for the portrayal.
